Sunday, February 28: Under the sponsorship of the Mission and Service Ministry and the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, DC, we will be showing this film originally scheduled for showing at St. Paul’s College in Washington the weekend of the first big snow. Following the film there will be an opportunity to discuss the film with an interfaith group of Muslims and Christians.

Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think, is a new documentary film that explores the expertly gathered opinions of Muslims around the globe as revealed in the world’s first major opinion poll, conducted by Gallup, the preeminent polling organization. Gallup researchers began by asking the questions on every American’s mind. Why is there so much anti-Americanism in the Muslim world? Who are the extremists and how do Muslims feel about them? What do Muslims like and dislike about the West? What do Muslim women really want?

As part of this groundbreaking six-year project, Gallup conducted tens of thousands of interviews with residents in 35 predominantly Muslim nations, as well as smaller populations in Europe and the USA. The broad extent of the polling has delivered findings for the world’s 1.4 billion Muslims with a plus or minus accuracy of 3% Focused on the issues of Gender Justice, Terrorism, and Democracy –the film presents this remarkable data deftly, showing how it challenges the popular notion that Muslims and the West are on a collision course. Like the research, the film highlights a shared relationship. This event was co-sponsored by CAIR.

Here is the Imam that spoke at the event tonight, Imam Johari Abdul Malik. He is the director of outreach for Dar al-Hijrah in Falls Church, VA, the same mosque that some of the 9/11 hijackers attended. Here’s what he had to say in

Abdul Malik: People even under the pressures that you and I know about, the deen of Islam is growing because people see even within all of this struggle it is better to be a Muslim under these conditions than to be a kaffir under any conditions... before Allah closes our eyes for the last time you will see Islam move from being the second largest religion in America-that's where we are now- to being the first religion in America.

Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think:

Here is what I saw tonight. I arrived late to the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arlington, Virginia and did not see the entire film but from what I saw it was clear that the message was that we Americans need to be more open because Muslims are just like the rest of us and that they bring so much value to our Democratic society. The Muslim men couldn’t have been more polite, opening the door for me, welcoming me and showing me where to go. I thought that was interesting because I can tell you from experience that there have been many times in real life that Muslim men have not opened doors or given any kind of consideration. After the film we split up into groups to discuss what we saw. I was in a group of about twenty people with a mixture of Muslims, Presbyterians and other Christians. The moderator was a very friendly man who goes to that church and he started by asking if we were surprised that 7% of Muslims said in a poll that they believe 9/11 was justified. This was an interesting question because this didn’t seem to cause too much of a stir but several of the Christians in the group acknowledged the fact that 7% of over a billion people is a lot of people. More interesting was the white male convert to Islam who was sporting a long beard who said he thought it was much more than 7%. But he had also made some comments about the government and special interest groups causing lots of problems so I figured he must have been a tree hugger before he decided to try Islam.

A very surprising topic of discussion was the way the news media portrayed Islam. Both Muslims and the majority of Christians in the group agreed that they thought Islam was portrayed in an extremely negative light. I remember thinking, you’ve got to be kidding! One Muslim woman was asked to speak and she refused but her parting shot was “Don’t listen to Fox News.” A member of the church leaned over and said, “Well who could disagree with that?” I asked him what the alternative was, Al-Jazeera?

During the course of the discussion group the feeling I kept getting was that whatever we did, we should not portray Islam in a negative light. The thought that kept running through my head during this half an hour discussion was that if we were not allowed to say anything negative about Islam then how were we going to “dialogue” and ever get anywhere in a quest to understand Islam? I watched the Christians in the group lay the ground work for future Dhimmitude and the Christians were swallowing it, hook, line and sinker.

Another question asked by the moderator was whether what people thought caused some Muslims to commit radical acts. A young woman who had a middle eastern name but who did not wear a hijab gave the obligatory propaganda line about radicalism being caused by lack of education and lack of opportunity. I said I disagreed and that the Christmas Day underwear bomber was educated, as well as the doctors that drove their truck bomb into the Scottish Airport in and effort to blow it up. The young Muslim lady conceded that point but then brought up the poor starving people in Gaza. When I said that I had read up on it and that the people were not starving there I was attacked by the Christians in the room. One Muslim lady of Hispanic decent became very indignant and asked me if I had ever been there. (No, but I’ve never been to Russia either and I know for a fact that communism existed and was responsible for the deaths of over 70 million people in that country in the last century.) The moderator decided to redirect the questions and the subject was changed. I thought, what the heck are we here for? Oh that’s right…CAIR wants to open us up to shutting our mouths.

The hallmark of the evening was when a young man who said he had lived in Iraq for a year and had known Muslim friends who weren’t really devout because they drank and participated in other non-Islamic activities but could be persuaded to become devout by reading the Qu’ran. This young man read some of the violent passages of the Qu’ran and the proverbial you-know-what hit the fan. There was another member of the church community who stopped everything and gave a speech about how we were supposed to just state our opinion and not read anything negative in the Qu’ran. Then we were treated to the obligatory, “You have to read the Qu’ran in it’s historical context” and “You have to read the proper translations to understand it” by the Muslims present. I wonder if Mohjammad Atta, Al-Qaeda or the Christmas Day bomber had a copy of Mohammad Asad’s The Message of the Qu’ran. (One of the guys in my group gave me a three volume set for free and when I got home I opened to the page where it talks about lewd women being locked up until death overtakes them. I thought, gee, that’s pretty clear. But then I read in one of the footnotes that it is against Islamic jurisprudence to punish any lewd woman unless there are four witnesses that can attest to her guilt. Now isn’t that special. In practice it takes four witnesses to prove a woman DID NOT commit zina or she gets punished. Period. I thought, these Dhimmis will lap this up and there will be more confusion than before. (But I’m pretty sure that’s why the man from Yemen gave it to me.)

One young man, sporting a kefiyeh who told us he was a member of the Muslim Student Association, (an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S.) offered this reason for the west being hostile to Islam. He said that once the cold war was over there was a vacuum and it was filled by hating Islam. How convenient. I guess he thinks it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that Mohammad said to kill the unbelievers where you find them. He could have said that and the Dhimmi Christians would have charitably told him how wrong he was. After the group sessions we went back to the chapel and different people go up to summarize what the groups had said. One woman stood up and said that they were all surprised about the 7% number regarding Muslims who thought 9/11 was justified. They thought it was a whole lot smaller. The rest of the comments were all in keeping with singing Kumbaya together. After the comments the Imam for the Dar al-Hijrah mosque spoke, Imam Johari Abdul-Malik spoke and was just as cute and engaging as he could be with peace and love messages that both the Christians and Muslims laughed and joked about. This is the same Johari Abdul-Malik who said “before Allah closes our eyes for the last time you will see Islam move from being the second largest religion in America-that's where we are now- to being the first religion in America.” (Over my dead body.)

The parting scene was the twelve or so Muslims who participated in the very in-your-face prayer display complete with no shoes and heads banging on the floor. You couldn’t miss it because it was right in front of the front door where the exit was. For a moment I contemplated stepping in front of them and exiting but I was pretty sure it would cause a major riot among the Dhimmified Christians so I refrained. The Muslims didn’t have any problem blocking the front door though. So much for equality in our interfaith “dialogue”.
